Bibbi has arrived at the sanctuary
Bibbi, a pig in a shelter whose nose had been badly maimed by a dog attack, is
now safely at the sanctuary. She is in good spirits, happily exploring her acre
of wooded quarantine and seeming to enjoy it very much indeed.
Getting
help for a pig is always difficult, There are only so many hours in a day and
so many dollars to spend.. most people and shelters have their own priorities
wrapped up in dogs and cats and horses and a dozen other desperate animals so
when someone helps with a pig, it is a real gift of love.
Compassion didn't stop with the dogs and cats at the shelter where this pig was
kept. They fixed Bibbi a pen as quickly as they could to get her out of the
cage she was in and provided her with a tarp for shade and a pool for cooling
off in the hot summer weather. They even had a vet look at her wounded
nose. No metropolitan shelter would have done more for this wounded, unfriendly
pig. In fact few I have dealt with in 20 years have done as much. Bibbi was
tended at the shelter with true compassion, despite the expectation of her
having to eventually be euthanized. And a volunteer there spent a lot of time
and effort trying to get this hurt pig to safety.
Bibbi was examined by the ear nose and throat specialist at the University of TN vet school and pronounced healing. She will develop some hardened tissue over the wound which still looks raw and painful. Function of the nostrils will not be adversely affected.
As Bibbi has healed more and gotten used to the sanctuary routine, she has found her place in the small group in Quarantine and begun to open up and show a happier, relaxed side of her nature. It is looking like she and Isaiah, a pig returned from an adoptive home of 7 years when his "mom" died, may become pals.
